Whenever I lead a
tour of Chicago’s architecture, I try to get the folks listening to me to carry
one thing away from the experience . . . to look up while walking around a city. We get so busy sometimes that we only
concentrate on moving forward – that is when we’re not busy checking our smart
phones.
But there is so
much to see . . .
Take the other day,
for example. As I was walking across the
river on the LaSalle Street bridge, I saw a sight that many people probably
missed. There, dangling from the
111 West Wacker Drive apartment building currently under construction in a
re-design by Handel Associates, LLP, was a porta-potty being lowered to the
ground.

You have to admit,
it’s something you don’t see every day.
But it makes some
sense. As I thought to myself at the time
. . . it’s a lot easier to lower the dumper than to lift the pumper.
Not the best reason
in the world to lift your eyes skyward while strolling through a big city, but
reason enough for me.
