July 19, 1922 – Steam shovels begin excavation
work in Grant Park, the first step in the construction of the new stadium south
of the Field Museum. The stadium,
designed by Holabird and Roche in a neoclassical design style, is the result of
an architectural competition to build a stadium as a memorial to American
soldiers who lost their lives in service to the country. The stadium will be completed in three stages
between 1922 and 1939, with its final capacity holding over 100,000
people.
